how caitlin clark and angel reese are breaking records. >> announcer: live in times square, this is good morning america. good morning america. hope you had a good weekend. boy, a big week ahead. democratic national convention kicks off tonight. president biden is going to make the keynote address tonight. >> george: vice president harris arriving in chicago last night after a week of campaigning ahead of the campaign. this morning we have team coverage on what's ahead. >> reporter: good morning. this is hardly the convention democrats envisioned. this morning more than 50,000 people, 5,000 delegates and some of the biggest names are descending here on chicago to rally behind a new candidate in this race, vice president harris. her challenge this week, laying out her own vision and putting her own stamp on this convention.

>> reporter: overnight kamala harris touching down in chicago, kicking off the democratic national convention with a narrow lead over donald trump. >> through these next 79 days, we will continue to build community, build coalitions and remind each other we are all in this together. >> reporter: harris and her new running mate hitting the road on their new bus. harris trying to fend off attacks from trump, who's called her a lunatic and questioned her racial identity. >> real and true measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you lift up. that's what we see as strength. we know what strength looks like. that's what strength looks like. anybody who's about beating down other people is a coward. >> reporter: it's a message harris is hoping to lean into this week.

the theme of the convention, for the people for the future, with speeches expected from barack and michelle obama, as well as bill and hillary clinton. but today president biden will give the primetime address, a handoff to his own vice president, just weeks after he dropped out of the race. since then the dynamics in this race have shifted. harris gaining momentum. >> i very much consider us the underdog. we have a lot of work to do to earn the work of the american people. >> reporter: jd vance dismissing it as a honeymoon period. >> kamala harris got a bit of a sugar high. >> reporter: even some of trump's closest allies practically begging him to stay on message. >> his policies are good for america. if you have a policy debate for the president, he wins. donald trump, the provacateur, the showman, may not win this election. >> reporter: but the former president is having a hard time sticking to the issues, this weekend claiming he's a, quote,

better looking president than her. >> they said, no, her biggest advantage is that she's a beautiful woman. i never thought of that. i'm better looking than she is. >> reporter: donald trump and senator vance will be hitting the campaign trail every single day this week trying to counter program the democratic national convention. back here in chicago, officials are bracing for large demonstrations, including protests to the biden's response to the israel/hamas vice president's rhetoric has been forceful in talking about the rising death toll in gaza but there's been no change on policy. wl rachel scott, thank you. there will be heightened security at the dnc as tens of thousands of pro palestinian protesters are expected to demonstrate in chicago this week. there's a massive march planned for today. matt gutman is in chicago with those details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the city of chicago will face its first major test in just a

couple of hours when tens of thousands of protesters will be marching on just the other side of the united center. you can see the hardened check point here. those protesters will be meted weu officers on bikes like these. yesterday at the first major march of the dnc, we saw hundreds of those bicycle cops forming this rolling barricade along the protesters, basically penning them in. and the police chief who was there telling me this is a system that has worked for them because he doesn't expect violence. thousands of his officers have under gone e escalation civil unrest training. there will be many marches focused on gaza. federal official tells me the stakes could not be higher. 50,000 convention goers including a current and former president, most of the cabinet, celebrities, means chicago faces likely its highest threat profile event in about a generation. george? >> george: thanks. let's go back to the convention

floor with rick klein. rick, some new polls show just how much this race has changed. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, george. donald trump went into and out of this convention with a distinct advantage in the polling. our latest polling shows vice president harris with a five point edge over donald trump nationally. new polling tells you the tale of how harris has surged. still a very close race. north carolina a three point edge. the same polling had harris, had biden down by nine points back when he was in the race against trump. >> george: economy still pop of mind? >> reporter: yes.

these issues are important. you still see an edge for harris on some of the issues maybe a little less relevant for voters. abortion only 59% say that's a key issue. harris has an advantage there. similar with health care. the economy almost nine in ten voters say it's important to their vote. trump is plus nine. crime and safety trump plus three. immigration and the border trump plus ten. harris hasn't talked a lot about issues so far. a lot of this is rebranding herself and resetting the race in terms of how voters are perceiving her on these issues. this is an area advantage donald trump. >> george: let's bring in mary bruce, jon karl. you got caught up in those storms yesterday. let's talk about the speech for president biden. going to be a bitter sweet moment for him. he'll get a lot of love in that hall. >> bitter sweet is the word. just a month ago joe biden thought this was going to be his

convention. tonight he's going to pass the torch to harris. he will tout the accomplishments he and harris have achieved together. make clear he thinks she is the future of the party. he has been praised for his decision to endorse harris, even though the party didn't give him a lot of choice in the matter. this is going to be an emotional moment for him. also a chance for him to cement his legacy. this is likely the largest audience he'll have, as his now 50 plus year in politics begins to wind down. the challenge for harris is to take that baton, run on her record with biden but all make clear what she would do differently. >> george: jon, you and i have been covering politics for a long time. hard to think of a more consequential summer in american politics. you go back to that debate june 27th. >> we have a transformed election. this convention is entirely transformed. a month ago they had to rip up a script they had been starting to work on this convention two

years ago. now you have kamala harris, who was a vice president standing in the shadows of an unpopular president. now suddenly the undisputed leader of a newly energized democratic partied. george, what i would look for here is harris, as mary suggested, to subtley but clearly distance herself from joe biden. interestingly also from herself and the positions she took when she ran in an ill fated campaign for the democratic nomination as somebody on the far left of the party now. she is a transformational figure, or wants to be one, who can appeal to the left of her party, center of her party and also diseffective republicans unhappy with donald trump. >> george: former president trump seems to be disoriented by the change. his team keeps saying focus on the issues. he keeps focusing on kamala harris. >> he really has been thrown off his game. you've heard him complain privately and publicly about the

fact that biden was you have republicans trump has advantage on crime, the border, the economy, but he is not focusing on the issues. his is saul about attack, attack, attack. >> george: okay, jon, thank you very much. we'll have team coverage all week long beginning tonight streaming on abc news 7 and here on the net work at 10. robin? >> robin: now the severe storms causing flash flooding in parts of the northeast. trevor ault is on the scene for us there in connecticut. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning. this was extreme flooding. look at the damage. behind me you see a huge section of the road that was ripped away in these floods. we have this gas line exposed so much of this road caved in. look behind me.

you see that's the hot tub from the house across the street that was brought over here by these powerful floods. we've seen scenes play out across connecticut. at times hundreds of vehicle and people stranded in the floods. overnight flash floods sweeping across the northeast. these roads in connecticut looking more like rivers, with more than a foot of rain falling in parts of the state. raging waters roaring past homes, sweeping away some cars. >> there's a lot of washed up road ways. lot of trees are falling. the soil is very loose and wet. >> reporter: in oxford, rushing water surrounding a restaurant where several people took shelter. >> the fence god wrecked. this is the worst i think i have ever seen. >> reporter: at least two people missing overnight after they were swept away by the current. more than 40 people were strand at a camp ground after a bridge was washed out cutting off their escape route. rescuers rushing to save dozens of drivers trapped in the

flooding. watch as people come to the aid of a man and his dog after his car was stuck in the water. mean time powerful rain and flooding is also inundating new jersey and new york, swallowing several cars, including this police suv. the coastal flooding wreaking havoc on communities along the eastern seaboard. >> oh my god! >> reporter: outer banks of north carolina, this home dragged off its foundation and into the ocean. now of course, we do know here in connecticut there were some areas that got more than a foot of rain in just a few hours. chance of more storms happening today with severe weather moving into the northeast. there are some emergency crews out here so far this morning, but as you might imagine, this is not an easy cleanup. >> robin: trevor, thank you. weather wreaking havoc on air travel across the area. this is a live look at newark airport. you can see it is already extremely busy because more than

8,000 flights were delayed, 1,300 cancelled on sunday. we're already seeing hundreds more this morning as more dangerous weather takes aim. ginger, i know you have the latest forecast. >> ginger: this was a front that sat around too long. that stationary front had two thunderstorms on it. there was a flash flood emergency hours ago even in suffolk county, long island there. we have pictures. look at this terryville, area there. more than 10 inches. widespread we had 2 to 4 inches, which is nothing to sneeze at. up there in connecticut, north of new haven, southwest of hartford. that's where you had 12 to even radar estimates of 15 inches of rain falling in just three, four hours. the risk is still high especially in parts of the green and white mountains, down into hartford again today. connecticut, beware. there is the storm.

that's ernesto. totally separate, right? it strengthened after it went through bermuda. waters are 10 to 15 degrees above normal in the north atlantic, so it's going to keep going out. >> robin: we're going overseas to the war in ukraine with ukrainian forces gaining more ground in russia. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, robin. we're actually in a front line border province where ukraine's audacious operation into russia began. you can see some of the damage here. there was a massive strike here saturday. there's mangled metal all around me and the air still thick from the stench of that attack. overnight interestingly, ukraine attacking the last remaining bridge over a key russian river effectively trapping what are thought to be hundreds more russian troops. this morning the ukrainians releasing this video they say special forces on the ground in close combat against the russians. we just met a group of russian soldiers who've been taken prisoners. a number of things stand out

here. it's astonishing how young they all are. almost all are conscripts, around 80% or so. they told us they were stunned by the ukrainian offensive and their commanders incredibly left them when it began. but rush that is resisting and advancing in the east of the country. meanwhile, president zelenskyy is calling on america and others to deliver agreed military supplies much faster saying, we strongly ask for them, there are no vacations in war. two weeks in, it feels like a potentially make or break moment for ukraine. will? >> will: a crucial period in the region. ian, thank you. we're going to turn to two rookie records from two basketball super stars. we'll start with, who else? caitlin clark making wnba history. look at that. full court pass going straight into the record books, breaking the rookie record for assists. she now has 232 and counting. then there's angel reese, the rookie with the chicago sky,

the hat belonged to a stunt man who wore it while he was a stand in for ford during the filming of indiana jones and the temple of doom. >> robin: how much? >> will: $630,000. do you like your new hat? >> robin: it wasn't me. it wasn't me. >> will: we have a lot more ahead including late summer travel deals you want to jump on now. >> george: right now the latest on former congressman george santos, expected to plead guilty today to fraud charges. investigat investigative reporter aaron katersky is live at the courthouse on long island. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. this time last week george santos was preparing to go on trial but in the last couple of days something changed. so today at this courthouse, one of the more bizarre sagas in recent congressional history may be coming to an end. this morning sources tell abc news disgraced former congressman george santos is expected to plead guilty to mut. federal charges and admit to a wide range of fraudulent schemes.

santos had maintained his innocence for more than a year. >> the reality is, it is a witch hunt. >> reporter: as recently as last week he reaffirmed his not guilty plea to 23 counts including fraud, identity theft and making fall statements. federal prosecutors said he charged donor credits cards without authorization, bought designer clothing with campaign money and took unemployment benefits meant for those during covid. >> he understands the seriousness of his charge. the fact he could be facing 20 years in federal prison. this might be an opportunity for him to avoid jail time or minimize the amount of time altogether by taking a plea. >> reporter: the terms of the expected plea agreement are not clear including the exact charges santos may plead to or what the sentencing could be. santos served in congress less than a year before he became just the sixth lawmaker expelled from the house of representatives. he admitted lying about much of his background including

education, employment and family history. lately he has been making videos on cameo. >> i hope you have a fan taftedic birthday. >> reporter: and has launched an account on only fans. he was supposed to start standing trial september 9th. instead the anticipated plea arrangement came together in just the last couple of days. the judge set a hearing couple hours from now. guys? >> robin: we will see what happens. aaron, thank to you. now the former football player portrayed in "the blind side." we're hearing from him for the first time since filing a lawsuit against the family who took him in. deborah roberts is here with what michael oher is saying. >> good morning. michael oher's story was tailor made for hollywood. a southern family taking in a homeless teen, then helping to launch him into the nfl. it sparked a best selling back and landed sandra bullock an oscar. but in real life the story was far more complicated. super bowl champ michael oher speaking out for the first time since filing a lawsuit against the memphis, tennessee, family who took him in as a teen.

their heart warming story depicted in the 2009 hit "the blind side." >> we want to know if you would like to become part of this family? >> kind of thought i already was. >> reporter: oher speaking with "the new york times" about the complex court case in which he alleges the touey took advantage of him, depriving him of millions. homeless at 18, oher said he thought he was signing adoption papers with the family, only to later learn he consented to a conservatorship allowing them to take control of his finances for 20 years telling the new york times the first time i heard i love you it was sean and leanne saying it. when that happens at 18 you become vulnerable. it turns into a hurt feeliie wa released, the new 38-year-old saying the portrayal of him as, quote, stupid, in the book first detailing his life cost him a

higher draft position while signing on with the baltimore ravens in 2009. >> the baltimore ravens select michael oher. >> reporter: saying the nfl people were wondering if i could read a playbook. i first sat down with the toueys and met michael during the height of the buzz. he was uncomfortable talking about the film and his portrayal in it. was it annoying the movie portrayed it as if you had to learn to play football? >> yeah. that part really got me. there wasn't anything -- it was never like that. >> reporter: oher now saying after seeing the movie, it felt like it was a comedy about someone else. on social media saying i started seeing stuff that i'm dumb, i'm stupid. every article about me mentioned the blind side like it was part of my name. the toueys, parents to two children, deny any wrongdoing after the conservatorship ended

last september saying each family member received equal parts of the income including oher who was given $138,000 over ten payments. the outcome is no doubt difficult for both parties. in a local paper the toueys said the allegations are hurtful but say they will continue to love michael as they did when he was a teen. he's been quoted as saying they were there for him, but clearly they see this outcome very differently. >> will: tough. thank you, deborah, for that. we're going to turn to terrifying alleged child abduction attempts caught on camera. two in the same community with minutes apart, with bystanders putting a stop to both. erielle reshef is here with more. good morning. >> you know, these two terrifying incidents rattled a michigan community. a suspect attempting to abduct a teen and a 7-year-old just hours apart he's now behind bars thanks to the witnesses who sprang into action.

this morning a michigan community relieved and grateful after police say citizens thwarted a pair of alleged attempted kidnappings hours apart. take a look at this video. authorities say it shows the suspect grabbing a 7-year-old girl off her bicycle carrying her away to his car. the girl's aunt trying to stop him. >> i just got louder and louder. that's right when he came up from behind her and scooped her up. he had one hand on her and one hand trying to get the wheel. i had one hand on the wheel trying to get his hand off of her. we went back and forth. >> reporter: scott van loven said he saw the commotion while he was driving by. immediately blocking the suspect's car from leaving. >> i literally pulled him out of the car and held him until police got here. >> reporter: authorities then arrests 23-year-old andy bala, now facing a slew of charges including kidnapping. police say an hour earlier, bala all tried abducting this

15-year-old girl. >> he asked if he could drive me home twice and i refused both times and i started walking off. he got out of the car, grabbed my wrist. he said, i'm gonna mess you up. >> reporter: she started screaming and waving her arms, catching the attention of paul biliter. >> i tilted my head up and i looked. i see him carrying her off. immediately i dropped the weed eater and bolted to the vehicle. >> those videos can make your heart stop. the suspect is being held on $2 million bond. he pleaded not guilty in both cases. the prosecutors saying as a community we owe a debt of gratitude to the good samaritans who stepped in risking their own safety to save these young girls. it's amazing how astute those two men were. we want to give our kids agency. we want them to get out and play. but they've got to be vigilant and all of us as bystanders have to be vigilant. >> robin: we often say when you see something, say something.

parts of western connecticut hit the hardest. some of the pictures out of southbury. this man and his dog were rescued by someone just passing by. there were dozens of high water res rescues. this was new jersey. you had 2 to 4 inches widespread really quickly. these thunderstorms were not moving much. they were training to the north and not having much eastward movement. that's why you had more than a foot of rain in southwest connecticut. that kind of bulls eye is where end up with those flash flood emergencies. today we're clear this morning but we're going to see the front pass through all of it. it was a stationary front. this cold front is gonna move through. half inch up to 2 inches on top of what we already have. when you're that saturated you can have that. ernesto strengthened again so the north atlantic is so warm. george, we'll still have rip current risks. there's still beaches that are closed because of it. >> george: ginger, thank you very much. we're going to turn to the race

for the white house now. vice president harris and governor walz out campaigning. president biden making the keynote address tonight. rachel scott on the scene in chicago. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning to you again. this is hardly the democratic national convention that the party envisioned just a few months ago, but this morning more than 50,000 people, 5,000 delegates are descending on chicago to rally behind the new candidate vice president kamala harris. harris touched down in chicago overnight after spending the weekend campaigning in pennsylvania. she kicking off the democratic national convention with a narrow lead over donald trump, up about five points in our abc news/washington post poll. the theme of the convention, for the people for the future, with speeches expected tomorrow by the obamas, bill and hillary clinton also expected to speak this week, too. but today it is president biden who will be giving this primetime address, handing off the baton to his vice president weeks after he dropped out of race. the challenge for harris will be laying out her own vision,

technoference. >> we're talking about 1300, 9-year-olds in canada. they held on how much technology is interfering with social interactions and every day routines in the home. what they did, they brought in the 9-year-olds, asked them how much is your parents phone use getting in your way of interaction? they asked them about mental health. what they found when they brought them back at 10 and 11 was that those kids that said, yeah, my parents' phone use is a problem also had a higher chance of exhibiting symptoms and were concerning for anxiety, hyper activity. now a lot more research needs to be done to clarify this association, bit totally checks out with what we call common sense science. >> george: we know screen time affects kids in many different ways. >> many different ways. the science is clear. we know it's been linked to development delay, higher risk of obesity, mental health conditions, sleep problems, decreased quality of

interactions between parents and children. it can increase aggression. so many things. the list goes on. at this point the science is clear. >> george: what can parents do? >> it really starts with being mindful of your phone use. i think we got here honestly, george. we live in a society in which we work too much. we don't always have the support. let's create phone free zones so we have clear rules in the home. be mindful of what the phones are replacing, such as time outside. we do have to get savvy with notifications and those parental controls so that the phones are not technofering. >> george: thanks for coming in. robin? >> robin: all right. now the growing movement of sober curious living rising in popularity among younger generations who are choosing to reduce their alcohol consumption or just not drink at all. rena roy is here. we're really interested in this.

>> it's okay. she'll be back. >> your entire life has been revolved around your children. their schedules, what they're doing, what phase they're entering. i was very nervous. >> reporter: 46-year-old attorney nakea gray and husband mike became empty nesters more than a year ago. they're still learning the ropes and planning their future. >> we've also just been exploring what retirement looks like. just thinking about, where do we want to live? are we going to stay in the area? >> reporter: the adjustment is called empty nest syndrome. while not a clinical diagnosis, it's real for some. what do most parents experience? i know for me there was a real sadness and a quiet to the house. >> yeah. so it can just be little bit of a shift, even crisis for some people. especially if you have struggled to maintain a balance of all of these different identity. you as an individual, partner, spouse. also your identity as parents.

it can be really disruptive. you have to allow yourself to connect, to share, to talk about how difficult it is. to realize that you are grieving. >> reporter: sue sapb and husband craig have been flying solo for nearly a decade since their two kids left home. >> you have to really think about what you want to do on this second phase in your life. >> reporter: suzanne even creating a website, adventures of empty nesters. >> i did it for healing. i was kind of lost then, you know? our kids were grown and gone. my husband was working. i didn't have a focus. i wanted to encourage people to go out and find adventure and to live this life, instead of being super sad. life is just beginning. >> reporter: as a mom, i, too, am in the thick of empty nesthood. my son nick heading off to his junior year of college. i would say we did all right. what do you say? and my 25-year-old daughter leila living abroad. is this the time for couples to rekindle?

maybe rediscover each other? >> oh, absolutely. find ways to play again as a couple. take a vacation. maybe plan that family vacation. start an activity for you so that way you're nurturing your family relationships, personal relationships and you're all caring for yourself as a human. >> such important advice. emotions do run high. on that college run with nick this weekend, we were both feeling happy, but a little heavy. it's a time of transition, guys, that can be particularly tough on single parents because they don't have anybody necessarily to always commiserate with. experts say realize this is a real time of grief, but also to find new passion and maybe discover flexibility with your finances. gonna start with carli whitwell senior director for refinery 29. carli, love that you are combining with us. your website, the way anonphusly people can post, women can post about their budgets. no judgment or anything like that. tell people about this series. >> talking about money especially as a woman can be really difficult. i mean, we talk about our relationships. we talk about politics. but when it comes to talking about how much we make and how we spend that money, we're less likely to share that with people. that's exactly why we created money diaries in 2016. we wanted a safe space for our audience to come together without any stigma. it's basically this. if you don't know, it's seven days. you are completely anonymous. from around the country. various ages and budgets. they have to tell us everything they spend down to the last penny.

that is everything from fixed expenses like your rent, mortgage, but also maybe a new outfit, maybe your nails, maybe what you spend on your children. along the way this gets a million page views every month. it's our most popular series. people love the voyeurism of it. they love the idea of peeking into someone's life. my analogy is we're giving them broccoli but disguising it as chocolate because they're learning about things. they're learning about student debt, budgeting, but packaged up in this approachable way. >> robin: i love how you explain it. we want to open up the first diary. open that diary, let's see what we see here. right behind us. there it is. we're getting this morning an it analyst from cincinnati, ohio, who makes $60,000 a year. what stands out most about this particular entry, carli? >> she's at a transition in her life, like so many of us are.

she's married, no children. she's in it making $60,000. but what's happened, she lost her job last year so she went through a lot of savings. savings are down to about $528. also key to know she and her husband have fixed expense. one being a $315,000 mortgage. also some credit card debt and student loan about $9,500 so there's some anxiety around money. >> robin: okay. rightfully so. we're going to bring in our budgetnista. great to see you in person. also rebecca jarvis. >> rebecca: how could i miss this? [ laughter ] >> robin: this is your wheel house. we're gonna give some tips. first of all, tiffany, tell people how important it is to share so much about your finances. >> it's critically important, robin. one way to celebrate awareness. it allows you to create solutions. shame shields solutions, and one

of the ways to disspell that shame is to give voice to it. the fact they are entering diary entries, they are giving voice to it. i want you to know money is a team sport. yes. and so you have to get an accountability partner, community, behind you. the fact that millions of people are watching is because they know they want community on their money journey. this is critically important. >> robin: it is so critically important. okay. so you talk about this particular person's savings. they had to dip into their savings to get back on track. how do you go about building back your savings? she lost her position. >> number one, i want her to ask herself, is there something i can do to learn to earn more? because she's in it, are there certifications she can get? don't just take any classes but maybe ask a mentor or ask someone who is in position who's making the money you want to make. what certifications can generate more income? two, i have been here before

where i have been in this ditch of debt, which debt means we can't save. i have had my credit card which is like a shovel. first thing first. when you're in a ditch, put the shovel down. how can we put expenses? is it that she is shopping a lot? is it credit card debt? how do you put that shovel down? third thing, i want her to ask herself, find some low cost destressors. it's not just about money, it's about living. what are some things you can do to make life more enjoyable that doesn't hit your pocketbook? last but not least keep that credit score high as possible because you might need to lean into it. credit is like, you need to know me before you need me. >> robin: i like that. >> and so a bad credit score makes for an expensive life because things cost more money when your credit score is bad. pay off your debt or at the very least pay the minimum and on time and try your best not to open any more debt.

>> robin: you don't want any more new debt. what are you seeing with the trends in the economy? she has a partner. >> rebecca: that's huge to have a partner and a partnership, and also to maintain that accountability like the budgetnista talked about. make sure you're putting it out there. once she does earn extra, she really wants to take a look. she doesn't even have to earn extra. she has $528 in the bank. with that money, you can turbo charge that through a cd or high yield savings account. your bank might not offer the highest rate on that so you can shop around. the average is about 1.8% but i have seen cd's for as much as 5%, even higher than that. look at that 401k. don't touch the 401k. i see a lot of shaking heads here. the 401k is meant for the future, but there is, in the vent of a financial hardship related to medical, she could look at the 401k. but really don't touch it. and then make sure to look at

your mortgage. if she has an expensive mortgage. they say bought their home recently, mortgage rates are dipping. some people are starting to refinance. >> robin: this woman got me to open up a couple cd's. i did because the rate is so much higher. what i love about this particular diary. before transferring to a four year college. they don't have as much debt. >> rebecca: exactly. community college. take the first two years. the things you can learn anywhere including at a four year degree and they can really take on less debt. they transfer. >> robin: you truly are a powerhouse group. so much we love with refinery 29. you can go to their website and find out so much more. tomorrow, refinery 29.com. we'll be back tomorrow with more.
