Lowest-rated movies of 2024 according to IMDb - Augustman Singapore (2024)

The year 2024, like many before it, had its share of duds. By that I mean the kind of films that make you wonder something along the lines of, “What the hell were they thinking?” So, here are the lowest-rated movies of 2024 so far, according to IMDb ratings.

That is not to say that the year has been a total lost cause. In fact, all in all, it has been quite a fabulous year for movies. There were many releases, both in theatres and on streaming services, that were well made, entertaining, had a coherent vision behind them and featured great actors who delivered the goods.

Do 2024’s lowest-rated movies have no redeeming qualities?

While some movies on this list have garnered very low ratings, a few are not, shall we say, entirely devoid of merit. They may have failed due to poor execution, lacklustre direction or poorly written scripts. However, some elements in them may appeal to certain viewers.

For instance, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 is a marked improvement over the original, which was a tonal mess and looked cheap. On the other hand, Night Swim is an uneven horror movie with a paper-thin plot but has some impressive visual imagery.

Similarly, The Garfield Movie might not be complex enough to appeal to adults, but young kids will love the simple, straightforward story, visuals and age-appropriate humour.

Note: Though the movies are rated according to IMDb (ranked highest to lowest), we have also mentioned Rotten Tomatoes ratings for comparison.

01

Argylle

IMDb rating: 5.7

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 33 per cent

Directed by: Matthew Vaughn

Cast: Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa

Movie duration: 2 hours 19 minutes

Synopsis: Elly Conway (Howard) is a spy novelist who is quite reclusive. One day, her world is turned upside down. She is accosted and saved from an ambush by a real-world spy named Aidan Wilde (Rockwell). He helpfully informs her that she is being hunted by an organisation called The Division because she possesses the ability to predict the future through her stories.

Why it failed: This movie proves that misleading marketing can often lead to disasters. The promos and trailer heavily promoted the suave, ultra-cool character, the titular Argylle, played by Henry Cavill, an actor who was hardly in the movie.

02

The Garfield Movie

IMDb rating: 5.7

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 36 per cent

Directed by: Mark Dindal

Voice cast: Chris Pratt, Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Waddingham, Harvey Guillén

Movie duration: 1 hour 41 minutes

Synopsis: Garfield (Pratt), an orange Persian cat, who like most of us, loves lasagna and hates Mondays. Garfield happily reunites with his long-lost adventurous father Vic (Jackson) but is then whisked away on a wild heist along with his beagle friend, Odie (Guillén), even though they would like nothing more than being pampered in the comfort of their home.

Why it failed: Though based on the comic strip created by Jim Davis, the script had nothing substantial and only kids found it amusing. If you love animated movies, you are better off watching Pixar or Studio Ghibli movies.

03

Role Play

IMDb rating: 5.5

Rotten Tomatoes: 26 per cent

Directed by: Thomas Vincent

Cast: Kaley Cuoco, David Oyelowo, Bill Nighy

Movie duration: 1 hour 40 minutes

Synopsis: Emma (Cuoco) lives with her husband Dave (Oyelowo) in suburban New Jersey. But unbeknownst to her husband, she is also an assassin for hire. When she says she is out on one of her “business trips”, she is actually scouting her targets. However, those trips have strained her marriage. To improve it somewhat, she and her husband decide to role-play and meet at a hotel as strangers. However, that is when Emma’s world comes crashing down, as Dave discovers her secret and her two lives collide.

Why it failed: A movie of this kind should have been exciting, sexy and action-packed — it is none of those.

04

Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver

IMDb rating: 5.2

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 17 per cent

Directed by: Zack Snyder

Cast: Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein

Movie duration: 2 hours 2 minutes

Synopsis: Picking soon after the Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire(which was only slightly better), Kora (Boutella) and her warriors return to Veldt, thinking Atticus Noble (Skrein) is dead. But lo and behold, he is not, and a Motherworld attack is imminent in a few days. The warriors scramble to prepare the village to harvest the grain to use it as a potential bargaining chip. Titus, Kora and others begin combat training of the villagers.

Why it failed: Snyder is capable of making good epic-scale movies (the DC movie Zack Snyder’s Justice League comes to mind), but clearly, when it comes to space opera, he appears to be orbiting an entirely different galaxy.

05

Miller's Girl

IMDb rating: 5.2

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 30 per cent

Directed by: Jade Bartlett

Cast: Martin Freeman, Jenna Ortega, Bashir Salahuddin, Gideon Adlon

Movie duration: 1 hour 33 minutes

Synopsis: Cairo (Ortega) is a high school senior who sparks a dangerous and forbidden sexual relationship with her creative writing teacher, Jonathan Miller (Freeman). Miller is initially unwilling but gives in since his married life has been stale for years. Not surprisingly, however, it leads to some disastrous consequences for his life and career.

Why it failed: Both Freeman and Ortega are excellent actors. But here, the shallow script is not worthy enough of their talents.

06

Night Swim

IMDb rating: 4.7

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 20 per cent

Directed by: Bryce McGuire

Cast: Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amélie Hoeferle, Nancy Lenehan

Movie duration: 1 hour 38 minutes

Synopsis: A former baseball player called Ray (Russell) goes into early retirement due to an illness. He and his wife Eve (Condon) decide to purchase a nice house with a swimming pool for them and their two children. However, the realtor Kay (Lenehan) casually reveals during a pool party that the previous owner mysteriously drowned in the pool. Ray appears to be a changed man, and his illness seems to be subsiding, but that only worries Eve, particularly when he appears to force a child into the water. Is it is condition, or is the dark presence lurking beneath the water to be blamed?

Why it failed: The plot is paper-thin, and despite a few genuinely creepy scenes, the movie feels stretched to the point of unravelling.

07

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2

IMDb rating: 4.6

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 46 per cent

Directed by: Rhys Frake-Waterfield

Cast: Scott Chambers, Tallulah Evans, Ryan Oliva

Movie duration: 1 hour 33 minutes

Synopsis: This is a sequel to Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, which was an adult horror retelling of A. A. Milne’s classic stories, Blood and Honey 2. Here, Pooh (Oliva) is wreaking havoc through the town of Ashdown as revenge against Christopher Robin (Chambers) for revealing his and other Hundred Acre Wood inhabitants’ identities in the first movie.

Why it failed: The sequel was actually a bit better than the original. But clearly, the novelty and shock value of taking characters from children’s stories and turning them into villains akin to Michael Myers or Freddy Kruger in serial killer movies had worn off.

08

Madame Web

IMDb rating: 4

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 11 per cent

Directed by: S.J. Clarkson

Cast: Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Andrew Scott

Movie duration: 1 hour 56 minutes

Synopsis: A paramedic in New York Cassandra Webb (Johnson) learns that she possesses clairvoyant abilities after she has a near-death experience when she is almost drowned. Suddenly, she finds herself in a world she does not fully understand and begins experiencing visions. Slowly, she realises she can see the future. Using her abilities, she takes it upon herself to rescue three teenage girls — Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazon and Mattie Franklin — who she learns from her visions are under threat from a man called Ezekiel Sims (Rahim). The movie also has Ben Parker (Scott), Peter Parker’s ill-fated uncle, for some reason.

Why it failed: This movie has some of the most wooden acting you will ever see, and its visual effects are so execrable that they will make you nostalgic for the ‘80s. Perhaps Sony executives should have seen it in their own visions.

09

The American Society of Magical Negroes

IMDb rating: 3.4

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 26 per cent

Directed by: Kobi Libii

Cast: Justice Smith, Zachary Barton, Anthony Coons

Movie duration: 1 hour 44 minutes

Synopsis: In this satirical comedy, an African-American artist Aren (Smith) is struggling to make ends meet. If that wasn’t bad enough, he faces daily racism due to his identity. One day, his life changes when he is introduced to a secret society called The American Society of Magical Negroes. While the organisation and its name promise a grand purpose, the members’ job is to ease the troubles of white people. The term “magical negro” denotes black characters whose sole job in movies, shows and other media is to help white people. Initially fascinated, Aren begins to question the society and its purpose.

Why it failed: Not a bad idea, and Smith is reliably compelling to watch. But the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

10

Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate

IMDb rating: 2.4

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 9 per cent

Directed by: Eric Fogel

Voice cast: Keith Ferguson, Laura Post, Josh Brener, Maya Aoki Tuttle

Movie duration: 1 hour 23 minutes

Synopsis: Megamind (Ferguson), having embraced his heroic side, is now the protector of Metro City. But his newfound heroism is put to the test when his former villainous crew, the Doom Syndicate, escapes prison. Thinking Megamind’s heroics are a cunning ploy, the Syndicate arrives ready to join forces. Megamind is forced to maintain the facade of evil while secretly assembling his unlikely team of allies: the ever-sceptical Roxanne Ritchi (Post), his now-ex-minion Ol’ Chum (Brener), and the tech-savvy newcomer Keiko (Tuttle).

Why it failed: Not only one of the worst movies this year, Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate makes a strong case for being one of the worst movies of all time.
