All my passwords saved in the Brave Browser disappeared today

#1Postby Wirtualny »

All my passwords saved in Brave Browser disappeared today. Is there a way to fix it somehow?

I upgraded my MX Linux 23.3, then installed an additional Falkon browser for myself. Immediately after installing Falkon another installation of the MX installer patches appeared, which is quite strange because it happened very soon after the installation of the previous patches.

Anyway, I was about to import passwords into Falkon when I noticed that .... all my passwords from Brave had disappeared. For example, when entering the forum, MX Linux Brave shows my login, but password seems forgotten.

Edit:

I upgraded my MX Linux 23.3, then installed an additional Falkon browser

Before at least one of those actions I would have suggested a system (at least / and /home) backup

All my passwords saved in the Brave Browser disappeared today (2)

Though not having a backup is indeed not a good thing, I find the image is not qualifying as a helpful answer.

Refrain from doing so from now on. Thanks.

Thank you @Eadwine Rose. It's the kind of dumb blaming of the user that keeps Linux far from common use despite the huge work of developers. @MikeR Feel free to respond to my posts in the future, but I will ignore you anyway.

If anybody found in my post info that I have no backup, quote it, please...

1) Typically backup is a bit older than the state of the system: from milliseconds to ∞.
2) Having backup should I stop myself from publishing the issue?
3) Having backup should I not be interested in fixing it?
4) Having backup should I not be interested in understanding how to avoid it in the future?

I think you could copy your default profile directory from your backup and it would restore:

Check your backup. Look in your backup home directory for this directory:
~/.config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/
Should be a directory labeled 'Default'

copy it back to your system.

Mine are missing also today, I didn't install any other browsers or anything.

Apparently it is a real issue, it's not just you; I'm trying to wade through this but getting lost: https://community.brave.com/t/aggregate ... ate/560154

Some seem to have solved it (temporarily at least) by downgrading, or changing something in a Windows file that I haven't figured out where it is in Linux so far, and wanted to see if more knowledgeable people here might have a solution.

I've had several issues with Brave, my bookmarks disappeared, I closed and reopened after disabling a VPN and Firejail but I don't know if they had any effect, eventually they were restored. At one point the bookmarks were partially duplicated – or overlapping.
Then later, I could not export bookmarks.

BUT – my password manager quit saving passwords, although the old passwords still remain.
I have ~ 1,000 tabs open.

Just FYI

++EDIT- "linux" search result links from post #7 provided link:

++EDIT-#2 Above links don't appear helpful - but good to know how to downgrade to the previous version per fehlix's post # 11.

Maybe I have about 1200 open, as I have 12 windows active! All my passwords saved in the Brave Browser disappeared today (8)
Haven't heard of that, but I think Brave does "power down" inactive tabs.
